Does this sound familiar? You go to work, then home, eat, do chores and go to bed so that you can get up tomorrow and do it all over again. The reason for this is that you are doing so many new things. You’re probably more open to new things as well. Why not try this restaurant or that free paddleboard lesson? Well, what if you applied this approach to your life all the time? Another way you can shift into this mindset is by saying yes to invitations and opportunities instead of turning them down.

You could sign up for a class at your local community college. You could try a new fitness class at the gym, like boxing or Pilates. You can learn many new things online as well, from videos, from free college courses, from aps and from many other sources. And you can teach yourself by doing. Work your way through a series of increasingly complicated breadmaking recipe, buy a bicycle and learn bike repair or—and this is admittedly drastic—buy a fixer-upper and throw yourself into DIY repair and renovation.

It can be much too easy to spend too much of your time at home. After all, you can order food. You’ve got movies and games there as you can chat with your friends all day. Why would you need to leave? Leaving a world where everything is mediated through screens can be surprisingly rewarding. Go to a store instead of browsing shopping sites online. Visit a museum or an art gallery. Go to a sporting event or to hear a band play. You’ll find that there’s no substitute for real life.
